Building Blocks of Planets 2020

Thank you all

Online meeting, 14 - 17 April 2020

Due to the recent improvement in radio/IR instrumentations, we are now able to directly observe the process of planet formation. First results have unveiled that the building blocks of planets, dust grains of pebble size, are highly concentrated near the mid-plane of the disk. These new findings emphasise that the dynamical interaction between the dust and the gas becomes essential, for both the theory and observations.

This meeting will be dedicated to the research of gas and dust in protoplanetary disks and their mutual interaction. The focus will be on the dust and gas dynamics, the dust feedback on the gas and their coupled evolution. Of special importance will be the dust-gas-drag instabilities, the streaming and settling instability and the resulting dust structures we expect. In this meeting we will discuss about the connection of theories to mm-cm observations (ALMA and VLA) including the emission, scattering and polarisation and how we can use the new results to improve our understanding of the properties of grains.

Key Questions

What structure do we expect from gas-dust feedback by inward drifting pebbles?
What are the largest grain sizes in the bright rings we observe at mm-cm wavelength?
Which type and sizes of grains are we observing at which wavelength?
What is the influence of dust scattering on the continuum emission and its polarisation?
Which conditions for grain growth are present in the gaps and rings?
What are the strengths and limitations of our hydro dust-gas codes?

Location and Venue

Due to the COVID-19 pandemie the meeting will be held fully virtual
